There's a task that sits on almost every merchant's to-do list, never quite gets done, and costs them sales every single day: rewriting their product descriptions.
Most product descriptions are written in a hurry copied from a supplier sheet, typed out quickly when the product was first listed, or left as a one-liner placeholder that never got expanded. They describe what the product is. They don't explain why someone should buy it, what problem it solves, or why it's better than the alternatives sitting one tab over.
The result is a listing that converts poorly, ranks badly in search, and fails to do the one job a product page exists to do: turn a browser into a buyer.
Stratum's built-in AI assistant is designed to fix this fast. Here's exactly how to use it, what it produces, and how to make the output sound like you rather than a robot.
What the AI assistant does
The Stratum AI assistant is built directly into the product editing modal there's no separate tool to open, no copy-pasting between tabs. When you're editing a product, the AI assistant is right there, one click away from the description field.
It reads the product information you've already entered name, category, attributes, variants and uses that context to generate a description that's specific to your product, not a generic template. The output includes a headline, a short introductory paragraph, key selling points, and an SEO-optimised longer description all in one generation.
It's a starting point, not a finished product. The AI assistant generates a strong first draft in seconds. The merchant's job is to review it, adjust the tone, and add any details only they would know a specific origin story, a material detail, a use case the AI didn't anticipate. That combination of AI speed and merchant knowledge is what produces genuinely great copy.
Step-by-step: generating your first AI description
Navigate to your product catalogue in Stratum and open the product you want to write a description for. This works for both new products with no description yet and existing products whose descriptions need an upgrade.
Before running the AI, make sure the product name, category, and any key attributes (material, dimensions, variants) are filled in. The more context the AI has, the more specific and accurate the output will be.
In the product description field, you'll see the AI assistant button a small sparkle icon in the toolbar. Click it to open the AI assistant panel alongside the description editor.
You'll see two options: Generate from product details (uses what you've already filled in) and Generate from prompt (lets you give the AI additional instructions). For most products, start with Generate from product details it's the fastest path to a usable first draft.
Before generating, select the tone that fits your brand voice and the length that suits the product:
-
Tone options: Professional · Conversational · Enthusiastic · Minimal. Choose the one closest to how your brand sounds. You can always adjust the output afterward.
-
Length options: Short (2–3 sentences, good for simple products), Standard (1–2 paragraphs plus bullet points, suitable for most listings), Long (full editorial description with SEO structure, best for hero products).
If you're not sure, Standard length with Conversational tone works well for the majority of product categories.
Click Generate. The AI will produce a complete description in a few seconds, displayed in the preview panel next to your product details. Read it through before accepting it check for:
-
Accuracy. Does it describe your product correctly? AI occasionally makes assumptions catch and correct anything that doesn't match your actual product.
-
Tone. Does it sound like your brand? If it's slightly more formal or more casual than you'd like, use the Regenerate with adjustments option to nudge it in the right direction.
-
Missing details. Is there something specific about this product a material source, a use case, a customer story that only you know? Add it manually after accepting the draft.
If the first generation isn't quite right, hit Regenerate the AI produces a different version each time. Most merchants find a usable draft within one or two generations.
When you're happy with the description, click Accept to insert it into the description field. Make any final manual edits add your specific details, adjust any phrasing then save the product as normal.
The description is now live on your store. If you want to update it later, the AI assistant is always available in the product modal to generate a fresh version or help you refine what's there.
Before and after: what the AI actually produces
Here's an example of the difference between a typical rushed product description and what the AI assistant generates from the same product details.
Dishwasher safe, chip-resistant, and available in four earthy tones that look as good on your desk as they do on your shelf. The kind of mug you buy once and keep for years.
The AI-generated version isn't perfect out of the box for every brand some merchants will want to dial back the enthusiasm, others will want to add more technical specification. But it's a dramatically better starting point than four words and a bullet list, and it takes thirty seconds to produce.
Getting the best results: prompt tips
When you use the Generate from prompt option, you can give the AI specific instructions to shape the output. Here are the prompts that consistently produce the best results:
Beyond product descriptions: other things the AI assistant can write
The AI assistant in Stratum isn't limited to product descriptions. From the same panel, you can generate:
The compounding effect: The time saving from AI-assisted copywriting compounds across your catalogue. A merchant with 50 products who spends 30 minutes writing each description manually is spending 25 hours on product copy. With the AI assistant, that same catalogue can be drafted in under two hours freeing up time for the parts of the business that genuinely need your attention.
Making AI copy sound like you
The most common concern merchants have about AI-generated copy is that it won't sound like their brand. It's a legitimate concern left entirely to its own devices, AI copy can default to a generic, slightly-too-enthusiastic register that doesn't match every brand voice.
The solution is a two-step process that takes an extra two or three minutes but produces significantly better results:
-
Give the AI a voice reference. In your prompt, include a sentence or two from an existing description you like something that sounds like your brand. Tell the AI to match that tone. It will calibrate its output accordingly.
-
Edit for the details only you know. After accepting the AI draft, read it once and add the specific details that only you can provide where the product is made, a specific material choice and why it was made, a customer use case from your actual feedback. These details are what make a description feel genuine rather than generated.
-
Remove anything that doesn't fit. AI copy occasionally includes phrases that feel slightly off a word that's too formal, a benefit that's overstated, a sentence that's doing nothing useful. Cut those without hesitation. The goal is copy that converts, not copy that's long.
-
Save a voice guide for consistency. Once you've edited a few descriptions into a style you're happy with, save two or three of them as voice references. Use them in your prompts going forward so the AI has a consistent target to aim for across your whole catalogue.
The bottom line
Product descriptions are one of the highest-leverage things you can improve on your store. They affect search ranking, conversion rate, and the overall impression your brand makes on a first-time visitor. And for most merchants, they're chronically underprioritised because writing them well takes time that's hard to find.
The Stratum AI assistant doesn't replace the merchant's voice it removes the blank page problem and gives you a strong first draft in the time it used to take to open a document and type the product name. What you do with that draft is still up to you.
If you have products on your store right now with descriptions you know aren't doing them justice, open one in Stratum and try the AI assistant on it. The worst outcome is a draft you don't use. The best outcome is better copy on your store in under a minute.
